Charles Kalomba recalls a turning point in his life when the late Dr. Gakuru, then Governor of Nyeri, asked him a simple but piercing question about his first degree. Caught off guard and uncertain of how to answer, Charles was struck by the realization that, despite his wealth of knowledge and experience, he lacked formal academic credentials. It was Dr. Gakuru who directed him to Professor Oborah, whose guidance—together with the support of Kimani and Julius Munyao—helped Charles begin the journey of aligning his practical expertise with recognized academic standards.
Meeting Professor Oborah was transformative. Through his mentorship, Charles attained a diploma, bachelors and masters degree in a relatively short time owing to Talent , Life and World Experience that earned him huge exemptions before final Credit Transfer. This achievement reignited his confidence and opened doors to institutions like Yom Kippur University in India, where he now collaborates with professors and scholars at the highest level. While recognition remains an ongoing challenge, Charles feels firmly grounded—his experience now backed by academic validation, and his voice finally heard in the spaces he once hesitated to enter.
Dr. Joseph Ochola Mbero reflected on his remarkable return to formal education after a 33-year hiatus. Having built a successful career in the oil industry—eventually rising to the position of corporate manager at Kenya Shell—he was entrusted with the critical role of transforming professionals into business leaders, a responsibility given to him by the former Managing Director, Engineer George Maina.
However, despite his extensive experience, Dr. Ochola recalled a painful moment during his 2002 parliamentary campaign when he was dismissed as an “academic dwarf” in comparison to opponents who held multiple degrees. That label lingered with him for years, casting a shadow over his professional accomplishments. With the encouragement of a close family member—a canon in the Anglican Church—and the mentorship of Professor Oborah, he embarked on a determined journey of research and academic rigor, ultimately earning a bachelors , masters and now a doctorate in Strategic Management, through experiential accreditations. All his degrees have been recognised by the Kenya Commission for University Education.
Dr. Ochola expressed heartfelt gratitude for this transformative chapter in his life. With his rich professional background now fortified by academic credentials, he feels empowered to merge experience with formal knowledge—and to do so with renewed confidence and pride.
